A Bit Up the Road and a Bit Different
In December of 2014, we took a day trip to the central Moravian city of Olomouc to take in their Christmas market. It has many of the same aspects to markets you may find in other parts of the country plus an atmosphere all its own.
Part of the atmosphere comes from the fact that the market is spread fairly evenly between the upper and lower parts of the main square, this ensures that crowds are also well distributed so there aren’t too many claustrophobic spots to get stuck in.
Many of the same items you can find at other markets can be found here, plus a few unique regional items. When it comes to drinks, punch is very prevalent at the Olomouc market as opposed to primarily hot wine available at home in Brno.
The town hall sits as a centerpiece on the upper square alongside the striking UNESCO listed Holy Trinity Column and both lend to the unique feel of the market which surrounds them. A trip up the tower of the town hall gave us a great overall view of the layout.
