To the Mountains

Located in North Bohemia, near the Jizera and Krkonoše mountains, Liberec is the main city in its region and a logical place to use as a base to travel into the surrounding areas from.

Upon arriving in the city, the first thing a visitor will likely notice is the landmark observation tower which overlooks the city from the top of Ještěd peak, it’s the symbol of the city and there’s not many places you can’t see it from in the town. The building was completed in the early 1970s and has won awards for its design.

A Feel for the City

When I visited Liberec, I found a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere and a generally clean city to stay in. There’s clearly some civic pride going on that’s difficult to miss seeing.

North Bohemia is the heart of the Czech Republic’s renowned and historic glass and crystal industry and this is evident in Liberec as there is no shortage of shops to buy glassware and Bohemian crystal from.

Liberec has a respectable range of accommodation and dining establishments, so finding a place to stay and place to eat to suit your tastes and budget should not prove too much of a challenge.

Liberec, Activities in and Around

Of course, being in close proximity to mountains, hiking and trekking are primary activities in the region around the city.

Excursions to regional attractions, such as the chateaus at Frýdlant and Sychrov, can be taken using transport connections from Liberec.

A visit to the glass museum in Jablonec nad Nisou, which is quite close to Liberec, will give you a very in depth overview into the long history and traditions of Czech glass art.

Liberec itself is not without offerings for visitors. The city has its own chateau, a very nice modern zoo and botanic gardens as well as an aqua park.

Of course, a trip to Liberec is not complete without a trip up Ještěd to take in the panorama around the area; on a clear day, you can see across the border into Poland from the tower. The tower can be accessed by cable lift or, if you’re a hardy soul, on foot via the various trails that run up the mountain.
